Survey Safe offer an online training package for fire marshals, but what is a fire marshal and what are their responsibilities?

The main duties of the fire marshal will depend on the fire risk assessment for the specific building or location but generally include:

  • To identify fire hazards at the workplace,
  • take note and report fire hazards to the appropriate person,
  • take the appropriate action in the event of a fire,
  • ensure that escape routes are kept clear and can be used with ease at all times.

Should a fire be discovered, the fire marshal is expected to do the following:

  • Ensure that the alarm has been raised,
  • check that any machinery has been made safe or switched off,
  • evacuate people from the area involved,
  • make certain that people with disabilities are assisted in line with their Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP)* see below for an explanation of a PEEP,
  • give details such as the location of the alarm triggered and the cause of the fire, if possible,
  • fight the fire with appropriate fire extinguishers if is safe to do so.

*What is a PEEP?

A PEEP is a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan. It is a bespoke escape plan for individuals who may not be able to reach an ultimate place of safety unaided or within a satisfactory period of time in the event of any emergency.

Who needs a PEEP?

PEEPs may be required for staff with:

  • Cognitive impairments,
  • mobility impairments,
  • hearing impairments,
  • sight impairments,
  • other circumstances.

A temporary PEEP may be required for:

  • Short term injuries, such as a broken leg,
  • temporary medical conditions,
  • Women in the later stages of pregnancy.

When the fire alarm is heard, fire marshals must ensure that everyone leaves the building as quickly and as orderly as possible. Electrical equipment should be closed down and windows closed if possible.

Fire Marshals should search toilets, restrooms and storerooms in their area of responsibility in a methodical way to ensure no one is left on site during the evacuation.

The Marshal should then go to the relevant assembly point and conduct a roll call to ensure all staff are present. The Fire Marshal should also ensure that no one goes back into the building until the Fire Brigade say it is safe to do so.

Fire Marshals play an important role in reporting any changes to ignition sources and combustibles stored on site. This fire prevention role supports the fire risk assessment process. The fire safety manager should work closely with fire marshals and any changes to policy or procedure must be shared.
